X Wing Slave 1

I bought the first edition Slave 1 model on Amazon yesterday, so that the sprog can have a new ship to play X Wing scenarios with, and just because it is very cool. I've always liked the design and it's such an iconic Star Wars craft, so it was worth splashing out, not that it was particularly expensive. It's arriving in the next couple of days so we'll get some more games underway in the interim, so that we can use all of it's specialised upgrades and features.

X-Wing Game Two

We set up another quick game of X-Wing yesterday, this time with my TiE fighter and TiE bomber up against the sprogs two B-Wings and an X-Wing. We didn't use any of the advanced rules so there were no missiles flying about and the action limited to basic combat dice. This time I got hammered as the TiE fighter / chocolate teapot blew up, even if my TiE bomber managed to escape with heavy damage. I did outfly the rebel scum in the process though, so the honour of the Imperial Fighter Command was upheld. It was great fun but the next game will definitely include missiles!

X Wing

I gave all of my X-Wing collection to my eldest son for his Christmas present, as he's a big Star Wars fan, so he's been keen to have a game now that he's finished his A Level mock exams. This was a basic skirmish between my two TIE interceptors and his X-Wing and A-Wing. I thrashed the rebel scum but we had a great time nonetheless, so we'll be setting up some more games very soon!

They Come Unseen

It's been a bit quiet around here of late as I haven't been away on holiday yet this year, which is when I do most of my board wargaming. I have, however, snapped up a bargain copy of Osprey Publishing's They Come Unseen Cold War submarine game, which I spotted on eBay and got for less than £15 including postage. It's brand spanking new, unpunched and ready to go, so when I do actually get away, pandemics notwithstanding, I intend to take it with me for a good play through. Excellent!

Undaunted Normandy

One of the guys at my local wargaming club was playing this the other day and I thought it looked really good as a 'beer and pretzels' type game. He was really enthusiastic and explained to me how the game worked, which convinced me to order a copy to give it a try. It's only £20 too, so if I don't particularly like it or it doesn't work very well for solo play, there's no big hit on the wallet. Excellent!

Battle Ravens

I think I might grab myself a copy of this new board game from the pen of Dan Mersey. It has had some really good reviews and ticks the Beer and Pretzels box, as well as being illustrated by none other than Peter Dennis. I particularly like the way the board represents a shield wall and the fact that there's some card based game play as well, which is always a good feature as it adds a bit of randomness. I'll just have to save up my pocket money!

Tank on Tank Defenders of the Reich: Kein Durchgang

I played the Kein Durchgang scenario from Defenders of the Reich today but it ended in a very swift victory for the Germans after they knocked out a key objective in Turn 3. The Germans had to blow up the bridge with their engineers or knock out a US self Propelled artillery unit to win the game. The US foolishly advanced the Priest too close to the bridge to get it in range of the German units on the other side, achieving an initial success by eliminating one of the two engineer units in a well placed stonk. However, the Germans advanced their Panzer IV HQ platoon across the bridge and knocked out the US artillery unit at point blank range. Boom!
