Tank on Tank: Westfront - Counterattack

This scenario looked like a real challenge for the Americans, who had a limited task force to hold off the advance of a much larger German Kampfgruppe, whose aim was to punch through the American defence line and exit the map. The US had 2 Sherman HQ's, 2 Shermans and 2 Wolverine SPAT's for their initial deployment, with another 2 Shermans and a Priest SPG coming on as re-inforcements in Turn 5. The Germans had 2 Mark IV HQ's, 5 Mark IV's, 2 Tigers and a Wespe SPG, so on paper looked like they would be unstoppable. This became even more apparent when they deployed in an extended jump off line right across the middle of the board!

In the end, the Germans spent most of their time using the Wespe to lob shells at the Shermans on their left flank, only advancing their tanks at the latter stages of the game. The Mark IV's did rush forward from Turn 6 but, as the scenario ended in Turn 9, this was a bit too late. The Tigers failed to inflict any damage on the Sherman company on the right flank, as the Americans used the cover of a wood to avoid being in line of sight. This meant that the Germans couldn't do much to weaken the US defence line, although they did knock out two Shermans and a Priest for the loss of two Mark IV's and the Wespe.

A well deserved victory for the Yanks!

  1. Thanks for the write ups. I have both the East Front and West Front games, but I have not had a chance to try them out. There was a post on TMP a few months back on using microarmor with them.

  2. Microarmour would work really well. You would need to devise some way to model the urban headed, woods etc so that the units could occupy them but, apart from that, it would be very straightforward.
